▷ How to become a freelance copywriter?

“Becoming a freelance copywriter” is a topic we see more and more on the internet. And there is nothing surprising in this! Copywriting is a marketing approach that we are only now realizing the importance of being able to sell online…

In addition, a copywriter usually works hand in hand with a web editor to create a website:

In this article, we will see 5 steps that will allow you to become a freelance copywriter to find all the job offers and get a lot of calls for tenders!

#1 – Determine your need for professional referrals

The first question to ask yourself is to determine what made you want to pursue a career as a copywriter. Why did you decide to do copywriting? Why are you making this career change?

Furthermore, copywriting is a writing profession (which I will return to in the next point). If writing without spelling mistakes and spending a few hours in front of your Word document is a real test for you, then you can go ahead!

#2 – Understand the freelance copywriting profession

Being a freelance copywriter actually brings two professions together: copywriting and freelancing.

With your “Copywriter” title, you’ll write sales pages for your clients, create newsletters, write texts for videos and other marketing tools. Thanks to you, they will be able to increase their performance by about 50%, that’s something!

With your “Freelancer” title, you will be responsible for the administrative and commercial management of your company. We don’t say it often, but a significant part of the freelance life involves preparing quotes and invoices, finding new clients and following up to get paid. Remember.

#3 – Practice copywriting

Copywriting is a profession in itself. Like everything else, it is learned. Contrary to what I’ve read elsewhere, it’s not enough to be “good at writing” and master the AIDA formula to become a professional copywriter.

In fact, the profession begins earlier. A good copywriter intervenes in the prospects of his clients for a long time. It must be able to understand their choices and words in order to deliver a message that resonates with what they are thinking. You don’t just have to put a face on your personality, you actually have to get inside their head.

To learn how to become a copywriter, you need to train yourself and choose the best copywriting training available on the internet. There are more. If you want to train with a serious organization, they usually cost 1000€ and more. That said, many are eligible for CPF.

#4 – Become a self-employed person so that you can earn your first euros

Once you’re ready (not before!) you can register with Urssaf and start self-employment.

You cannot make money in France (and almost everywhere else in the world) without creating a legal structure that can gather your customers.

There are many possible legal forms (SASU, SAS, SARL, etc.), but the one I recommend is the micro-entrepreneur status. Indeed, it is the simplest to manage (administrative and accounting procedures are extremely simplified) and, above all, it is completely free. You only pay fees and taxes if you make money. This is not the case for the company where certain fees apply regardless of your turnover.

In short, it’s really ideal for getting started and testing your idea. And who knows, maybe in a year or two you’ll earn enough to become a company!

#5 – Promote your copywriting services

The final step is to promote your copywriting services. It’s not enough to educate yourself and become the best copywriter, if no one knows you exist, you won’t earn much!

You have two options for this:

  1. You can register on various platforms that connect freelancers and clients. All you have to do is create your profile, provide a small introduction about yourself, your availability, possible references and your rates. Next, you will be competing with other professionals in your sector;
  2. You create a blog where you will promote your copywriting services. Indeed, blogging has many advantages for freelancers. It already allows you to stand out from your competitors. You will no longer depend on the algorithms of different matching platforms. And you can create your own community that is willing to pay a higher price for your services.

I can only recommend the second solution. It is the most reliable in the long run! Note that blogging takes time and I think you should consider using networking platforms, at least to get started.
