A third-party app brings Dynamic Island to any iPhone, but is it just a party trick?
The developer just brought Dynamic Island — currently exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max — to any iPhone running iOS 16.1.2 through iOS 16. A version of this mod for jailbroken iPhones (called Dynamic Peninsula) has been available for some time now, but this mod does not require a jailbreak. However, for this to work, you need to install software on your computer, use that software to get a third-party utility on your phone, and then use that utility to install DynamicCow—the software that enables Dynamic Island—on your phone. You also can’t use the latest version of iOS 16 — it only supports iOS 16.1.2 through iOS 16. After all, you have to put your Apple ID and password into third-party apps to install it, and that’s reason enough not to. But Dynamic Island was a nice addition to the iPhone 14 Pro, so I can see why people might be interested in trying it out.

I installed DynamicCow to see how well it works… and technically it does what it describes – bringing the exact speaker island of the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max to older iPhones… but there’s (one) problem. This would be a nice addition if the iPhone didn’t already have a large notch, but half of Dynamic Island’s content is covered by the existing notch, and it takes up more space than the top of your screen. Oh, and also, if you have an iPhone 11, there’s a big red bar at the top of your device. the developer hopes to fix itbut as it stands, I can’t find a practical everyday use for it and can’t recommend trying it.
Despite these issues, it continues to amaze me how developers use hardware in ways that were never intended. While the average consumer might not need it, some developers who don’t have an iPhone 14 Pro Max might find it useful to try out the features they’ve implemented with the Dynamic Island feature. Or online writers could use it to easily get screenshots of the dynamic island in place, since the notch cutouts always appeared as a bit more of the screen in screenshots. I’m sure someone will have fun with it, although for the most part it’s just a party thing.
How to Get Dynamic Island on Any iPhone
Follow these instructions at your own risk. Although I was able to install the app successfully, once installed on my iPhone 11 it creates a big red bar at the top of the device blocking the time, battery percentage and other icons. You too BEING HAPPY disable the dynamic island BEFORE By uninstalling DynamicCow and AltStore, otherwise you will be stuck on dynamic island on your device until you reinstall the app to disable the app or update your device. (Ask how I know.)
1. Install Alt Server on Mac. This is used to get the AltStore on your iPhone, which allows you to install IPA files.
2. Click the AltServer icon in your top bar, install the Mail plugin, then enable the plugin in the Mail options.
3. Connect iPhone to Mac.
4. Choose to install AltStore on AltServer and select iPhone.
5. Open the newly installed AltStore app on your iPhone and sign in with your Apple ID.
6. On your iPhone, go to the DynamicCow GitHub page and scroll down to Releases. Download the latest version.
7. Open AltStore, click the plus sign on the My Apps page, and select the DynamicCow.ipa file to install Dynamic Cow.
8. Open DynamicCow and select the iPhone 14 Pro model you want to dynamically name, then select Activate.
9. When you enable this, Dynamic Island will work on an earlier iPhone – well, the half you see isn’t covered by the notch.
