The Fauve d’Or was awarded to the film “The Color of Things”.
Unprecedented in twenty years, the same publisher, moreover, independently won the Fauve d’Or for the best album of the Angoulême Festival. A year after moving away Listen, beautiful MarciaCha et là by Marcello Quintanilha, the publisher who holds the record for nominations in the official selection this year, doubled the stakes by winning the prestigious trophy for this year. Color of things By Martin Panchaud from Switzerland and audience award Naphthalene Sole Otero from Argentina. Two albums among La Croix’s favorites for this 50th edition.
The first is an unusual graphic novel with an undeniable formal audacity, as the characters, embodied in small circles, evolve in overhead sets reminiscent of video game staging. The dialogues written around the illustrations feel great as titles. And it is important, because their role has increased tenfold compared to the classic comic strip, to give life to these circles of color.
It was rejected by all publishers
The story? The disappearance of his father and the violent aggression of his mother lead a 14-year-old boy to pocket his fortune just playing a race. We’re surprised that this darkly humorous melodrama with a gallery has ruined us. the losers pathetic, enough to forget that they are circles running through the pages…
Rejected by all French-language publishers, Martin Panchaud’s album became the subject of the first publication in Germany, where publications here and there were excluded from the rule of publishing only non-French authors and agreed to it. Since then, this independent publisher has done very well Color of things won several awards (especially from ACBD critics) and rave reviews from booksellers (16,000 copies sold since last September).
Major graduations: major publishers
The Audience Award is gone Naphthalene, by Sole Otero, a fascinating Argentinian family fresco in which characters with disproportionate bodies seem to struggle with the weight of the past. The grandmother of a young woman who takes over her grandmother’s apartment after her death and pulls the strings of her tormented existence.
